Stanford University is one of the foremost research and teaching universities in the US, consistently ranked best for research.
Stanford's role as an incubator of technology in the heart of Silicon Valley is world renown. In the last 50 years, university faculty, staff and graduates have launched around 1,200 companies.
Today, more than 50 percent of Silicon Valley's product comes from companies of Stanford alumni (this excludes Hewlett-Packard).
Hewlett-Packard, SUN Microsystems (meaning Stanford University Network), Silicon Graphics, Genetech, Amgen, Cisco Systems, Yahoo and Google are just some of the billion dollar companies that Stanford University has helped create.
Within Stanford, the following research institutes work with the Link:
The Centre for the Study of Language and Information (CSLI) was founded in 1983 as an Independent Research Centre by researchers from Stanford University, SRI International and Xerox PARC (now PARC). Work is devoted to research into the emerging science of information, computing and cognition, that relate to major growth fields, including human-computer interaction, information processing, biotechnology, data retrieval, education and telecommunications.

Media X is Stanford University’s campus-wide research network for the innovative design and study of technologies of the future. The network influences the next generation of technologies relevant to media, commerce, learning, entertainment, transportation and other realms of society by bringing together an interdisciplinary group of Stanford researchers. It coordinates the development and implementation of active collaborative partnerships with industry, foundations, and governments in Stanford’s laboratories and classrooms.
The Department of Communication engages in research in communication and offers curricula leading to the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. The M.A. degree has traditionally prepared students for research on mass media or for careers in journalism or documentary film and video. The Ph.D degree typically leads to careers in teaching and research-related specialties.
The Stanford Centre for Innovations in Learning (SCIL) was established in 2002 as an independent center of excellence to conduct scholarly research to advance the science, technology and practice of learning and teaching. The Center brings together teachers, scholars and students from around the world to study how to improve formal and informal learning across cultural boundaries.
