PROSPEKT ENTREPRENEURIAL-FELLOWS PROGRAMME 2008:
The Prospekt Entrepreneurial Fellows Programme provides recently finished UG4, MSc, MBA and Ph.D. students from the University of Edinburgh's School of Informatics with three months salary to pursue further research into the technical feasibility of a high-growth, technology-related start-up idea. The scheme is funded by Prospekt – a four year, SEEL funded programme to provide commercialisation infrastructure and best practice for and within the School of Informatics. Prospekt Entrepreneurial Fellows (PEFs) will be based on campus in Appleton Tower at the University of Edinburgh.

"From Triple Helix to the Science City"
Link Associate Michael Clouser, will overview two innovative incubation and seed stage capital financing models that interacted with students at Cornell and Stanford Universities. One is a non-profit (NGO) model located in a remote area in upstate New York and the other is a for-profit venture capital fund centred in Silicon Valley. The effectiveness of the methods and models will be compared and analyzed in accordance to the missions of the organizations. The speaker was the CEO of Student Agencies from 1996-1999, and an Associate with Dot Edu Ventures from 2000-2004. The talk will be rich with first-hand experiences and analysis, and will be followed by a lively discussion of questions and answers.
The event will take place on 28 May 2008 , 10.00 - 16.30h at Newcastle University Business School.

"The Trials and Tribulations of an eLearning Spinout"
The event is a cross-organizational one between the Edinburgh-Stanford Link, the Edinburgh Entrepreneurship Club, the eLearning Alliance, the Management School and the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. It is free to attend and all in the wider community are invited to come along. The first part (interactive session) will run between 18:00 and 19:30 and will be followed by an informal networking session in the foyer of the Management School from 19:30-21:00.

David founded Speck Design in 1996, and was involved as a designer and manager on multiple projects ranging from notebook computers for Apple computer to medical projects for Medtronic. David brings an integrated Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Design background to these projects. David helped spin-off of a couple of companies including. SimpleDevices which created ground breaking connected devices for home and car entertainment. SimpleDevices was acquired by Universal Electronics in Oct. of 2004. Reason Products - Which had patented technology in cable management and telephone headsets and was an OEM supplier for Motorola. Silicon Valley Speakers Series: Vish Mishra on "The Best Kept Secret in the Valley"
Vish joined Clearstone in March 2002 with over 30 years of leadership and management experience in the high tech industry including software, Internet, networking and telecommunications. He is a founder and served as a board member of Telera, a cutting edge voice web infrastructure company funded by Accel and Sequoia, which was sold to Alcatel for $140 million in 2002. Vish was also cofounder of Excelan (1983), which was funded with $7.3 million in venture capital, went public in 1987, sold for $225 million in 1989 and went on to contribute $1 billion to Novell’s revenue in subsequent years.

4th Annual STUDENT ENTREPRENEURSHIP CELEBRATION
For the fourth year the event will be held in the Playfair Library in the Old College Together we will celebrate student entrepreneurship with students from all over the University of Edinburgh, staff, and friends from the wider Edinburgh community. This event is a colloboration between various organizations such as SIE, EPIS, and The Edinburgh Entrepreneurship Club. This year's event will feature a 45 minute talk from Mike Lyons, co-founder of the Stanford Technology Ventures Programme, who currently still teaches in the programme and also is a venture capital partner at ePlanet Ventures in Silicon Valley. Following Mike's talk, the celebration will begin, complete with the traditional student jazz band and drinks. Finally, following on last year's success, student entrepreneurs will highlight their ideas and new ventures through posters to be found throughout the festive space.

Link Associate Mike Clouser attends "the Roundtable on Entrepreneurshp Education" (Stanford REE) Europe.
Link Associate Mike Clouser attends "the Roundtable on Entrepreneurshp Education" which focused on the entrepreneurial university, entrepreneurship education, and the relationship between the two and economic development in a region. The event that was sponsored by Stanford Technology Ventures Programme (STVP) and Accel Partners -an international venture capital firm based in Silicon Valley- also discussed the dynamics of the Catalonia case, especially the Technical University of Catalonia, an emerging entrepreneurial university itself. In addition, best practices in entrepreneurship education were shared by entrepreneurship teachers from all over World. One of the important findings of this year's group is the importance of teaching creativity and confidence to technology students in entrepreneurship curriculums, and best methods in this regard were discussed. Also in attendance from Scotland were James Barlow, the CEO of SIE and Leslie Heatherington from Stathclyde University.

Link Associate Mike Clouser to attend Scott Shane's Entrepreneurship Ph.D. Researchers Seminar in Cleveland, Ohio. The intensive one week long seminar event will review and discuss approximately 40 research papers amongst 20 Ph.D. researchers. Scott Shane's seminar was based on the idea that entrepreneurship research should strengthen and deepen entrepreneurship teaching at Higher Education Institutions. Dr. Shane is a leading teacher and researcher in entrepreneurship. Currently he is a Professor of Economics at the Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management.

Link Associate, Mike Clouser, presented a paper on the dynamics of university-government-industry relations in the burgeoning life sciences space at the Babson Entrepreneurship Research Conference in Madrid, Spain. Mr. Clouser, a Research Associate of the Edinburgh-Stanford Link and a Ph.D. Candidate focusing on entrepreneurship and Innovation in the School of Management and Economics at the University of Edinburgh. "Triple Helix Power Play" was the topic of Michael's research presentation. It surrounded the recent phenonomen of the move by the Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), the largest, most successful and most entrepreneurial research institute on the bio technology side. Further research and analysis will specifically compare the Florida and Scotland regions as emerging centres of life sciences innovation.

The Edinburgh-Stanford Link announces its first CEO MasterClass of 2007.
Hosted by David Law, co-founder of Speck Product Design. David is one of four founders at California-based Speck Product Design, where he is involved as a designer and manager on several projects ranging from notebook computers for Apple to toys for OddzOn Products. David brings an integrated Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Design background to these.
Born and raised in Scotland, he pursued a degree in Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering at the University of London. He returned to Glasgow University to complete an honours degree in Product Design Engineering. In early 1993, he moved to the US and joined IDEO Product Development, based in Palo Alto. David played a lead role on projects ranging from portable computers to furniture and office equipment. He has several utility patents including one of the first major commercial uses of Memory Metal (shapememory alloy).
David also teaches "Experiences in Visual Thinking" at Stanford University, a required creativity course for engineering students, and regularly helps run volunteer projects to introduce school kids to engineering and product design.

The EIR-Ph.D . programme is administrated by the Edinburgh-Stanford Link (ESL). Funding for the programme is provided by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), which is administered by the European Union (EU).

Mike Clouser on "Starting a Business" for undergraduate students.
The Link Associate Mike Clouser, also a Ph.D. Candiate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Edinburgh, is conducting a workshop entitled "Starting a Business" for undergraduate students at the University of Edinburgh. In conjuction with SIE and the Careers Office at the University of Edinburgh, this effort is planned to be the first in a series of activities designed to inspire and teach entrepreneurship at the undergraduate level and help change the culture of the University of Edinburgh to a more entrepreneurial one per the mission of the Edinburgh-Stanford Link. Thus far 38 students have registered for this workshop, which will teach the basics of starting the business and then involve the students in a creativity exercise designed to enable and empower them to discover real business opportunities that might serve the needs of the student population of the wider Edinburgh community.
Approximately 10% of Edinburgh's population of roughly 500,000 have student status, thus representing a sizable target market for student startups in the community.

Our first session will be the afternoon of Thursday November 9th and will feature Kevin Hartz, founder of Xoom.com and leading expert in consumer Internet businesses. Link senior software developer George Bett and commercial director Nick Wright will present Link technology at this year's ParcAberporth Unmanned Systems event in North Wales. The MOD-supported event will demonstrate a range of military and civil UAV flying technologies to 400 invited guests. The event will feature a number 'firsts' for the UAV industry, including the first trans-Atlantic UAV flight.

Mike Clouser presents in the Economics Society at the University of Edinburgh Michael Clouser is hosted by the Economics Society at the University of Edinburgh to present on the topic of "The Economics of Entrepreneurship".
